History

Montgomery County was created on September 10, 1784 from land originally part of Philadelphia County and it is part of the Delaware Valley. Montgomery County marks the region's northern border with the Lehigh Valley. The county is named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada, or for the Welsh county of Montgomeryshire, which was named after one of William the Conqueror's main counselors, Roger de Montgomerie. Montgomery County was the site of early lime, paper, iron and textile industries, as well as canal and railroad systems. Host to Washington's army for nine months during the Revolution, Montgomery County was set off from Philadelphia County on September 10, 1784. Montgomery County strives to preserve the civil, political, and religious history of the county and to promote the study of history.
The residents of Montgomery County live in an area rich in history with charming historic homes, barns, and springhouses among lush fields, woodlands and open spaces. The exquisite craftsmanship of days gone by including hand-hewn beams and pegged, random-width floors, fieldstone fireplaces and forged hardware; hand-carved woodwork and shutters that actually close! Montgomery County is an opportunity to learn about the history of the country.
